India Electric Two-Wheeler Market Size and Forecast 2026-2034

The electric two-wheeler market in India is expected to expand from 995 Thousand Units in 2025 to 8,753.86 Thousand Units in 2034, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.33% from 2026 to 2034. The market is driven by increasing fuel prices, government incentives, growing awareness about the environment, and the adoption of electric two-wheeler solutions in urban and semi-urban areas.

India Electric Two-Wheeler Market Outlook

An electric two-wheeler is a motorcycle or scooter that is driven by an electric motor and a rechargeable battery, as opposed to the conventional internal combustion engine. An electric two-wheeler emits zero pollutants, is noise-free, and is cheaper to run and maintain than a petrol-powered two-wheeler. An electric two-wheeler can include an electric scooter and an electric motorcycle, which can provide the following features: regenerative braking, smart connectivity, and a removable battery.

In India, electric two-wheelers have become popular due to rising fuel costs and growing awareness about the environment, as well as favorable government policies. Two-wheelers are the most popular form of personal transportation in India, and electric two-wheelers have become a viable option for commuting. The government’s efforts to promote electric two-wheelers through subsidies, tax breaks, and charging infrastructure development have helped the cause. Consumers, logistics companies, and ride-sharing services are increasingly turning to electric two-wheelers for economic reasons. Advances in battery technology, range, and performance have helped build consumer confidence. As the Indian government pursues sustainable mobility and lowers emissions, electric two-wheelers are becoming an integral part of the future of mobility in India.

Growth Driver of the India Electric Two-Wheeler Market

Strong Government Support and Policy Incentives

One of the most important factors contributing to the growth of the electric two-wheeler market in India is the support from the government through favorable policies and financial assistance. The central and state governments have launched subsidies, tax exemptions, and reduced registration charges for electric vehicles. The incentive schemes reduce the initial purchase cost of electric two-wheelers, making them more accessible to the mass market. The policies also support local production and battery development, which helps to build a strong ecosystem for electric vehicles in the country. Moreover, policies that restrict carbon emissions and the use of fossil fuels are encouraging consumers to shift to electric vehicles. The government’s investment in charging infrastructure and awareness campaigns is also fueling the growth of the market. In India, the government has launched various schemes in the electric vehicle value chain to encourage the production, adoption, and usage of electric vehicles. In July 2023, NITI Aayog has outlined the plan for the development of electric mobility in India in line with the vision of the Indian government to achieve net Zero emissions by 2070.

Rising Fuel Costs and Lower Operating Expenses

Rising petrol prices and the cost of ownership of vehicles are pushing consumers towards electric two-wheelers in India. Electric vehicles have lower operating costs, as electricity is less expensive than petrol and requires less maintenance, as there are fewer moving parts. Electric two-wheelers are preferred for daily commuting, delivery, and ride-sharing services that involve frequent travel. In the long run, the cost savings on fuel and maintenance costs outweigh the additional purchase costs. As consumers become increasingly aware of the total cost of ownership, they are realizing the economic advantages of electric two-wheelers. June 2025: The number of vehicles in India is expected to surge more than double—from 226 million in 2023 to almost 500 million by 2050—as estimated in a new, independent series of studies launched by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW). Two-wheelers will continue to dominate the market, constituting close to 70 percent of the total vehicles—over 350 million—as estimated in a business-as-usual scenario developed on the basis of GDP and population growth until 2050. The number of private vehicles is expected to nearly triple, reaching 90 million by mid-century.

Urbanization and Demand for Sustainable Mobility

The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has approved ₹800 crore in March 2023 for three oil companies: Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) to establish 7,432 public charging stations (PCS) at their fuel stations in India. In March 2024, an additional ₹73.50 crore was approved to enhance 980 charging stations, and 400 more were approved through Expressions of Interest in different states. Rapid urbanization and traffic congestion are driving the demand for compact, eco-friendly, and sustainable transportation solutions. Electric two-wheelers are ideal for short-distance travel in congested cities, providing smooth, noiseless, and pollution-free travel. Increasing awareness about the environment among consumers is encouraging the adoption of sustainable transportation solutions. Organizations and delivery companies are also turning to electric two-wheelers to fulfill their sustainability objectives and lower operational expenses. With the increasing adoption of stricter emission standards and green transport by cities, electric two-wheelers are becoming a popular mode of transport in India. As mentioned in the latest Economic Survey 2023-24, it is expected that by 2030, more than 40 percent of the population of India will be living in urban areas. This forecast has been made on the basis of studies and reports of NITI Aayog.

Challenges of the India Electric Two-Wheeler Market

Limited Charging Infrastructure and Range Anxiety

One of the biggest challenges that the Indian electric two-wheeler market is currently facing is the lack of charging points, especially in rural areas. The lack of charging points makes customers anxious about the range of the vehicle, which in turn affects the confidence of customers in electric two-wheelers for long-distance travel. Although charging at home is possible, it is not feasible for residents of apartments who do not have parking space for their vehicles. Additionally, the charging time is longer compared to petrol vehicles.

High Upfront Costs and Battery Concerns

Even with incentives, electric two-wheelers tend to be more expensive than their conventional counterparts, which may act as a deterrent for consumers who are price-conscious. The battery cost is a major component of the overall cost of the vehicle, and the concerns regarding the life of the battery, its replacement cost, and safety are also factors that influence the purchase. The lack of awareness among consumers regarding the warranty and performance of the battery is also a factor.

India Electric Motorcycle Market

The electric motorcycle market in India is gradually unfolding as consumers are looking for more powerful electric options to conventional petrol motorcycles. Unlike electric scooters, electric motorcycles are designed to provide better acceleration, higher speeds, and longer ranges, which appeal to the younger generation of consumers. As traffic in cities is increasing, fuel prices are rising, and pollution is becoming a concern, consumers are increasingly adopting electric motorcycles. The companies are also working on more sporty designs, connectivity options, and better battery technology to make them more desirable. Although the market is not as large as the electric scooter market, growing consumer acceptance of electric technology and improvements in lithium-ion batteries are expected to fuel the growth of the electric motorcycle market in India.
