What is Aquafeed?

Aquafeed refers to formulated feed specifically developed to provide aquatic animals with the nutrients required for growth, health, development, reproduction, and efficient farm performance. It is an essential input in commercial aquaculture, where controlled feeding helps producers manage nutritional requirements and improve production efficiency.

Aquafeed formulations generally combine different sources of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and functional ingredients. The precise composition depends on the aquatic species, age or growth stage, farming environment, feeding behavior, production system, and nutritional requirements.

Aquafeed can be manufactured in different physical forms, including floating pellets, sinking pellets, extruded feeds, and crumble feeds. Manufacturers adjust particle size, density, water stability, nutritional composition, and processing conditions according to the intended application.

The product is widely used in fish farming, shrimp farming, hatcheries, nurseries, ornamental aquaculture, and other commercial aquatic production systems.

Global Aquafeed Market Outlook

The global aquafeed industry is expanding alongside the development of commercial aquaculture. As aquaculture becomes increasingly important to global seafood supply, farmers require reliable and nutritionally balanced feed products that can support growth while improving feed utilization.

As aquaculture grows as a sustainable alternative to traditional fishing techniques, the worldwide aquafeed business is expanding steadily. The expanding worldwide population and rising awareness of diets high in protein are major drivers of market demand. For example, the world's population was expected to be 8.275 billion as of mid-February 2026. The demand for sustainable protein sources is rising due to this expanding population, and as fish and seafood output increases to fulfil the world's growing food needs, the aquafeed business is experiencing tremendous expansion. Strong aquaculture growth in the Asia-Pacific area increases feed demand in nations like Vietnam, Indonesia, and India. Because many are worried about how utilizing fishmeal may affect the environment, there is a growing movement toward plant-based feed and sustainable feed solutions. Government initiatives that promote the construction of aquaculture facilities and export operations are responsible for the market's growth.

Furthermore, Aquaculture already provides 58% of the demand for seafood, which increased from 19.2 kilograms in 2019 to 21.4 kilos in 2025, highlighting the structural tailwind for formulated feeds. Even as economic growth slows, the growing middle classes in Nigeria, Indonesia, and India are switching from cereals to fish proteins, resulting in consistent consumption. Feed economics support the argument that fish and shrimp have an efficiency advantage over pork since they only need 1.2–1.8 kg of feed per kilogram of live weight. Through 2031, China alone anticipates a 3.8% yearly increase in seafood demand, consuming the majority of its own record output and importing goods from neighbours like Vietnam and Thailand. The International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) 22000 harmonized food safety regulations are lowering trade barriers and allowing mills to expand for export. Together, these factors support price discipline in the face of raw material inflation while boosting the aquafeed industry in all of the major regions.

Market performance is influenced by several interconnected factors, including:

• Aquaculture production volumes
• Fish and shrimp farming expansion
• Seafood consumption
• Feed ingredient prices
• Availability of protein sources
• Feed conversion efficiency
• Species-specific nutritional requirements
• Technological developments
