The calculation was performed separately for each major infection and testing technology.

The individual values were then aggregated to determine the total market size.

4. Patient-Based Estimation

A patient-based methodology was used to estimate the potential testing population.

The analysis began with the relevant population and estimated the number of individuals requiring STD/STI testing based on:

• Disease prevalence
• Diagnosed cases
• Symptomatic populations
• High-risk populations
• Routine screening recommendations
• Pregnant populations
• Contact tracing
• Follow-up testing

The calculation was structured as:

Relevant Population × Testing Eligibility Rate × Testing Rate × Average Test Revenue

This approach helped estimate testing demand where direct test-volume information was not publicly available.

5. Test Volume Estimation

Testing volume was calculated separately for major infections.

The analysis considered:

• Screening tests
• Diagnostic tests
• Confirmatory tests
• Follow-up tests
• Repeat testing
• Routine screening
• Partner/contact testing

For infections requiring multiple tests or confirmatory procedures, the testing pathway was examined to determine the number of diagnostic procedures generated per patient.

This prevented the market from being underestimated by counting only the initial diagnostic test.

6. Laboratory Diagnostics Estimation

Laboratory-based STD diagnostics were estimated by assessing the number of tests performed through:

• Hospital laboratories
• Independent diagnostic laboratories
• Reference laboratories
• Public health laboratories
• Physician-office laboratories
• Sexual health clinics

The estimated number of tests was multiplied by the average realized revenue per test.

The calculation was:

Laboratory Test Volume × Average Laboratory Revenue per Test = Laboratory STD Diagnostics Market

7. Screening-Based Estimation

Screening demand was estimated separately from symptomatic diagnostic testing.

The analysis considered populations routinely screened because of:

• Pregnancy
• Age
• Sexual-health risk
• Clinical guidelines
• Routine healthcare visits
• Partner exposure
• Public-health screening programs

The calculation was:

Eligible Screening Population × Screening Rate × Testing Frequency × Average Test Revenue

This provided a separate estimate of preventive STD diagnostic demand.

8. Confirmatory Testing

Confirmatory testing was incorporated into the model where an initial screening result required additional diagnostic evaluation.

The analysis considered:

• Initial screening
• Positive-test confirmation
• Repeat testing
• Follow-up testing
• Treatment monitoring where applicable

The estimated number of confirmatory tests was multiplied by the corresponding average price.

This helped prevent the market from being underestimated by considering only first-line screening tests.

9. Average Selling Price Estimation

Average test prices were estimated separately by:

• Infection
• Diagnostic technology
• Testing location
• Test type
• Laboratory versus point-of-care testing
• Consumer versus institutional testing

Pricing information was obtained from:

• Diagnostic manufacturers
• Laboratory providers
• Healthcare providers
• Public reimbursement schedules

• Distributor catalogs
• Retail and direct-to-consumer testing services

Where list prices differed substantially from actual reimbursement or realized revenue, the model used an estimated realized price rather than simply applying the highest publicly listed price.

10. Reimbursement-Based Validation

A reimbursement-based approach was used to validate diagnostic revenue.

The analysis considered:

• Government reimbursement
• Private insurance reimbursement
• Public health program payments
• Laboratory reimbursement
• Patient out-of-pocket payments

The calculation was:

Reimbursed Test Volume × Average Reimbursement per Test = Estimated Diagnostic Revenue

Reimbursement levels were compared with commercial pricing to determine a realistic average revenue per test.

Company annual reports, investor presentations, product portfolios, and diagnostic revenues were reviewed.

Where companies generated revenue from both STD diagnostics and other diagnostic categories, only the estimated STD-related portion was included.

12. Top-Down Market Estimation

A top-down approach was applied to validate the bottom-up estimate.

The broader infectious-disease diagnostics and molecular diagnostics markets were assessed first. The share attributable to STD/STI diagnostics was then estimated based on:

• STD testing volumes
• Disease prevalence
• Diagnostic utilization
• Molecular testing penetration
• Screening activity
• POC adoption

The calculation was structured as:

Relevant Diagnostics Market × STD Diagnostics Share = Estimated STD Diagnostics Market

The resulting estimate was compared with the bottom-up market calculation.

13. Supply-Side Validation

The supply side was analyzed by examining diagnostic manufacturers and laboratory providers.

The analysis considered:

• Product portfolios
• Diagnostic revenues
• Test volumes
• Laboratory capacity
• Distribution networks
• Product launches
• Geographic coverage

The combined supplier-side estimate was compared with the demand-side calculation to identify inconsistencies.

14. Demand-Side Validation

The demand-side model was based on the number of individuals requiring STD diagnostics.

The calculation followed:

Population → At-Risk Population → Testing Eligibility → Testing Rate → Number of Tests → Revenue

The results were compared with laboratory activity and company-level information.

This approach helped validate whether the estimated market size was consistent with the underlying patient population.

15. Avoiding Double Counting

Particular attention was given to avoiding double counting between:

• Screening and diagnostic testing
• Initial and confirmatory tests
• Laboratory and point-of-care testing

Bottom-Up Approach

Number of Tests × Average Revenue per Test

Top-Down Approach

Relevant Diagnostics Market × STD Diagnostics Share

Supply-Side Approach

Company Revenues + Product Analysis + Laboratory Data

The results were compared and reconciled.

Where discrepancies occurred, assumptions relating to patient populations, testing rates, test prices, reimbursement, and diagnostic technology adoption were reassessed.

18. Final Market Calculation

The final estimate was then validated against patient-based calculations, test-volume estimates, company revenues, reimbursement information and top-down market estimates.
